Job Summary

The position provides control over the use of radioactive material and/or ionizing radiation to patients. The position works closely with internal and external partners regarding regulatory compliance, training, new equipment, and reporting.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master or Doctorate of Science in Physics, Medical Physics, Radiologic Physics or Health Physics.
  • Qualified to conduct all surveys of the nuclear medicine/PET equipment as required by the American College of Radiology accreditation requirements.  This would include certification in nuclear medicine physics or radiological physics by the ABR; in nuclear medicine physics by the ABMP or the CCPM; or in nuclear medicine physics and instrumentation by the ABSNM.
  • Eligible for and maintaining a Texas license in nuclear medicine physics.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the Partners-in-Caring process and follow the behavioral expectations of Memorial Hermann Health System while performing all job duties.

Principle Duties

  • Provides acceptance testing of new nuclear medicine/PET imaging equipment.  Provides ACR accreditation testing for nuclear medicine/PET imaging equipment.
  • Advises clinicians and employees on unusual, complex, or critical problems that they may encounter in new or existing procedures and when responding to emergencies involving radioactive material or z-ray-producing equipment.
  • Coordinates with clinicians in developing in implementing quality assurance programs to ensure that imaging and treatment uses of radioactive material and machine-produced radiation are optimum for patient care and that physicians and employees are protected.
  •  Maintains compliance with regulations and best practices.
  • Audits nuclear medicine, radiology, and radiation departments for compliance with state regulations and system operating and safety procedures.
  • Provides radiologic physics support for facility activities involving the use of medical radiation in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
  • Designs establish and implements written policy and procedures for the radiation safety program encompassing the use of radionuclides and machine-made radiation.
  • Responds to radiation incidents involving patients, employees, or visitors and take appropriate corrective action to mitigate/minimize the impact on the individuals and the facility.
  • Evaluates radiation exposures to patients, employees, or visitors and report exposures to the radiation safety committee(s).  Investigates any unusual radiation exposures.
  • Evaluates protocols for computerized tomography in order to assist clinicians in optimizing image quality while maintaining patient doses as low as reasonably achievable.
  • Serves on the radiation protocol committees for fluoroscopically guided CT procedures.  Performs dose estimates for cases involving prolonged fluoroscopic time and pregnant patients. Provides the committee with reports of high exposures.
  • Performs shielding calculations for nuclear medicine/PET and diagnostic x-ray facilities.
  • Participates in radiation safety committee meetings at various sites.  Evaluates the overall radiation safety program for each radioactive material license at least annually and recommend improvements.
  • Provides educational programs to physicians and employees.
  • Writes radioactive material licenses and x-ray registrations and amendments to them.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.
