POSITION SUMMARY

The Registered Nurse is responsible for nursing care of the patient within the OR and will coordinate the needs of the surgical team with other care providers necessary for the completion of surgery.  The OR nurse is the patient’s advocate and assures that quality care is administered.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participates as a team member in support of the total preoperative process.
  • Supervises and directs patient care in a single operating room.
  • Organizes nursing activities efficiently and effectively.
  • Transports patient to operative suite in stretchers.
  • Identifies patient and assesses patient’s chart for completeness and establishes basic. interventions for patient care:
  • Review patient history.
  • Assess the patient’s physical status.
  • Conducts pre-operative time out.
  • Notes patient’s allergies.
  • Identifies/verifies/ensure that:
  • Patient (identification/match) is correct.
  • The surgeon (match to patient/slated procedure) is correct.
  • The Operable (patient) site is correct.
  • Implants are the right implants for the patient.
  • Informs surgeon or anesthesiologist of change.
  • Explains the intraoperative phase of routine procedures and care to the patient.
  • Provide emotional support for patients intra-operatively.
  • Prepares operating room according to the procedure; assembles and provides properly functioning equipment, supplies, and instruments before the start of procedure and positions and adjusts equipment as required during the procedure.
  • Anticipates the needs of the surgical team.
  • Monitors compliance with principles of the aseptic technique according to accepted standards.
  • Communicates with perioperative care personnel and documents and records accordingly; completes operative records.

EDUCATION

  • Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing

CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES

  • Current RN license to practice in the state of Texas; re-licensure requirements must be maintained and on file with the facility.

EXPERIENCE

  • Preferred ASC and Ophthalmology experience.
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications are required.
