Description

For over 50 years, Legal Aid Chicago has provided free civil legal assistance to people living in poverty in metropolitan Chicago. Each year our attorneys, volunteers, and staff help resolve civil legal problems, including domestic violence, consumer fraud, and unfair evictions.

Legal Aid Chicago was founded on the philosophy that all individuals are entitled to quality civil legal representation, regardless of their income. We work to ensure that poverty is not an impediment to justice by dismantling the legal barriers that perpetuate inequality. Legal Aid Chicago staff live our mission through our core values of equity, excellence, inclusion, kindness, and respect.

Position:

Legal Aid Chicago seeks a full-time paralegal in our Immigrants and Workers’ Rights Practice Group (IWR). IWR includes the areas of employment, immigration, migrant farmworker, and human trafficking law.

IWR’s four teams work both independently and in an interdisciplinary manner when these areas of law intersect. This paralegal position will work with immigrants filing for a variety of benefits with USCIS.

The position will focus on immigrant survivors of gender-based violence resulting in human trafficking and will work on applications for the T Visa and other related immigration applications and respond to other holistic needs as identified by the client.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct intake and comprehensive legal screening for potential new clients
  • Draft immigration applications, and letters to clients, caseworkers, and other professionals
  • Work with clients to identify holistic needs and work together to address needs in a client-centered and led, and in a trauma-informed manner
  • Assist clients to report their trafficking to law enforcement
  • Work with external case managers and internal client support services for client needs
  • Participate  in weekly team meetings to present new cases and discuss team development
  • Provide outreach and create materials to educate service providers and immigrants about our services, with a focus on domestic violence and human trafficking
  • Work with other organizations that serve immigrant and human trafficking populations including participation in local stakeholder meetings and groups serving trafficking survivors
  • Assist attorneys with administrative tasks
  • Attend training and maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant issues
  • Maintain case files and accurate timekeeping in the electronic case management system
  • Assist with grant reporting, as appropriate and applicable
  • Other duties as determined by the Supervising Attorney or Director.

Salary:

Commensurate with experience. Legal Aid Chicago offers a comprehensive benefits package, including low-cost employer-paid health plan options, employer-provided group life, and long-term disability insurance, fitness center access, generous paid time off, and much more.

The applicant’s personal background, experience, or professional background should reflect the ability and desire to work effectively in cross-cultural situations with clients, co-workers, and the community we serve.
