Job Summary

WM is seeking a passionate communicator to join its internal communications team. The primary focus of this job function is the development and strategic use of storytelling and content to drive employee engagement among 50,000 team members in support of WM’s business priorities and its vision of always working for a sustainable tomorrow.

The role will support the day-to-day execution and implementation of internal communications with a focus on crafting compelling visual communications, managing relationships with business partners, and advancing communications technology.

This role requires a high level of strategic thinking, independent decision-making, and the ability to partner with communications team members and cross-functional partners to drive results.

The ideal candidate has proven graphic design and relationship-building skills, the ability to be strategic and execute, great instincts, brilliant ideas, and a knack for connecting the dots.

He/she also must possess a deep understanding of internal communications and analytics; excellent written and verbal communications skills; and a strategic and creative mindset. The role will report to the Sr. Manager of Communications.

II.  Duties and Responsibilities include the following

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.

  • Contribute to the planning and development of integrated communication strategies and tactics that effectively communicate the strategic and cultural goals and initiatives in alignment with WM’s business priorities.
  • Consistently produce and distribute high-quality internal content including but not limited to executive communications, newsletters, all-employee meetings, field communications, and more.
  • Advise and support executives on strategic communications messaging channels and delivery style.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies and tactics for continuous improvement.
  • Conceptualize and oversee the production of internal communication collateral (audio/video, print, etc.) and visual communication materials such as digital signage, infographics, animations, and graphic assets across a range of internal channels.
  • Support management of editorial calendars for strategic, consistent content across all internal channels.
  • Ensure consistent, authentic, and on-brand style/voice/tone among editorial, programming, and events.
  • Manage IT business partner relationships and technology updates to enable communications platforms.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in communications, marketing or business.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of previous experience in an internal communications role
  • Expertise in visual content creation and video, including channels and analytics
  • Experience with CMS and posting content to web-based channels
  • Understanding of and experience with content development, and other technical processes related to social/digital content development
  • Excellent writing skills, including digital content, and executive messaging, with the ability to develop materials under extremely tight timelines
  • Sound judgment and independent decision making
  • Exceptional project management skills from beginning to end
  • Experience forging solid relationships at multiple levels of an organization and across cultures
  • Digital media capabilities
  • Team player who collaborates and works well among a diverse team
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience Preferred
  • Related experience working in a large corporation, or in an agency environment providing support and counsel to a large corporation.

Work Environment

Listed below are key points regarding environmental demands and the work environment of the job.

  • Onsite office setting but may require travel to field locations (10-15%).
  • Must have travel availability (monthly, quarterly, as needed) if not in Houston metro.
  • Candidates should be located in either Houston, Dallas, or Austin, Texas.
